Student Wellness Advocates

The Tahoma School District is working in partnership with King County Department of Community and Human Services (DCHS) to implement a screening and intervention system called "Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral To" services -- or SBIRT, with the goal of proactively support students in building skills to prevent youth mental health and substance use issues. My name is Gwendolyn Huete and I am one of the new Student Wellness Advocates for the SBIRT program here at Tahoma High School! This is my fourth year in Tahoma School District. I spent the last three years at Summit Trail Middle School and excited to be here at the high school working with students and families in this community! I am originally from Los Angeles, California. There I graduated from UCLA with a Sociology major.  Education is my passion and I continue to pursue higher education when I have the chance. I have a Masters in Educational Counseling from the University of La Verne and a Masters in Educational Leadership from WGU. I moved to the Maple Valley area about five years ago with my husband, two kids, and two dogs. It has been an amazing experience for my family! I enjoy the Pacific Northwest and all of the hiking, camping, lakes, mountains it has to offer.  Washington is a beautiful place!

Mina Massey is an SPU grad who has a background in school counseling. After having experience at both the elementary and middle school level she is very excited to work at the high school level helping with this amazing program. She cannot wait to work with Gwendolyn Huete to launch SBIRT at Tahoma High and begin seeing the impact it will have on these students. She is looking forward to making connections and appreciates the sense of community that flows through the Tahoma School District. Go Bears!
