Plant Science (periods 1-4) 1st and 3rd Quarters
This is a one-year lab science/CTE course designed for students who want to “get their hands dirty” while they learn all about plants. Students will learn practical skills in sustainable urban farming, landscaping, home gardening, habitat restoration and plant propagation. Plant anatomy and physiology, native plant identification, invasive plants, primitive plants and the food system are some of the large topics that we will cover throughout the year. The course includes much required field work. Appropriate outdoor attire is a necessity and may be stored in the classroom. Additionally, students will practice written and oral communication while developing leadership skills in a group setting. Membership in the FFA student club is recommended for this course. Human Body Systems (periods 5-7) 2nd and 4th Quarters
Students will examine the interactions of human body systems as they explore identity, power, movement, protection and homeostasis. We investigate the structures and functions of the human body and use data acquisition software to monitor body functions such as muscle movement, reflex and voluntary action, and respiration. Exploring science in action, students build organs and tissues on a skeletal manikin, work through real-world cases, and play the roles of biomedical professionals to solve medical mysteries. This is the second year of Project Lead the Way (PLTW) biomedical science; previous completion of Principles of Biomedical Science is recommended. Human Body Systems is science and CTE cross-credited course. Membership in Future Health Professionals (HOSA) is recommended. The HOSA fee is still tbd but will be $30 or less.
