Class Information

English 9
English 9 is a two-semester course required of all freshmen that improves writing, reading, speaking/listening, language and research skills as outlined in the Common Core State Standards for grade 9. Students read literary and informational texts; write essays in the informative/explanatory, argumentative and narrative modes; and participate in independent and group speaking/listening activities and research projects. PreAP/Honors English 9
PreAP/Honors English 9 will provide students with the advance reading, writing, and thinking skills necessary to prepare students for the expectations of the Common Core State Standards, as well as for the rigors of advance placement and college courses. Extensive required reading in classics, contemporary literature, poetry, and nonfiction will serve as a springboard for literary analysis, process essays, on demand timed writes, and personal response papers. This class requires more reading, more demanding writing assignments, and more out of class time than English 9. More information can be found in the Link to Class Syllabus.

Modern American Myth
This semester-long class for juniors and seniors will explore the graphic novel and comics as a product of American culture and identity. Students will read into the history of early 20th Century America, be introduced to several concepts of literary criticism and synthesize your knowledge of art and literature to fully appreciate this modern literary form. Students will, of course, read a variety of texts and respond to them in a thoughtful, academic manner. Students can expect to engage in regular discussion with peers, develop critical writing skills and work towards an independent analysis to demonstrate learning. <Link to Class Syllabus>.
