Attendance Office

Attendance Policy -

The regularity of attendance is a major contributing factor in reaching the instructional objectives of a course. The following procedures have been designed by the Tahoma Senior High School staff to develop cooperation between parents/guardians and school authorities in order to assist students in establishing lifelong habits or reliability and promptness. Laws of the State of Washington specify that parents have the primary responsibility for ensuring the attendance of their students at school. The law further states that students shall be regular and punctual in attendance.

Definitions and Procedures

Admit Slips

After an absence and prior to returning to class, a student must report to the attendance office to pick up an Admit Slip, which will be either unexcused or parental excused. No student will be admitted to class without an Admit Slip. Failure to do so may result in discipline for truancy. Students leaving class to pick up an admit slip are tardy. Please help your student clear all absences by calling the attendance office or sending a note within 48 hours.

Early Dismissal/Late Arrival Process

A student who arrives late or who needs to leave early before the end of the school day must check through the attendance office to obtain an admit slip immediately upon arrival on campus. A student is required to bring a written request from home stating the reason and signed by the parent/guardian or phone call from parent

If a student needs to leave school early for an appointment the student should bring a note from home to the attendance office before school begins. The student will be issued a pass at that time so the student may leave at the appropriate time. NOTE: Improper sign out may result in a 1 hour detention.

Excused Absences

Illness, family emergencies (e.g. funeral or serious illness), and appointments of a medical, dental, or legal nature represent excused absences.

It is the student's responsibility to get missed assignments for the times they are absent. This can be done by looking on the web for work posted or e-mailing the teachers. A 24 advance notice is required if teachers are e-mailed.

Pre-arranged Absences

Absences for other reasons may be excused if the parent calls or e-mails the attendance office Prior to the planned absence. While absences may be excused by the school, students should understand their academic progress may be adversely affected and some course work may not be able to be made up.

Saturday Discipline Day

Saturday Discipline Day is held on Saturday mornings from 7:30-11:30 a.m., and consists of two hours of supervised study and two hours of school beautification. The sanction for not fulfilling a Saturday Discipline obligation is closed lunch and/or revocation of parking privileges until the Saturday School is served. Students without work will be sent home and the day will not count. Emergency cancellations may be made by parents before 7:30 a.m. on the assigned Saturday by calling 425-413-6200, ext. 1030.

School Discipline

Generally, school discipline for minor infractions will result in detention or Saturday School. However, other forms of discipline such as closed lunch, temporary revocation of parking privileges or other forms of corrective action may be substituted for standard consequences at the discretion of the grade level administrator.

Students are tardy if they are not in their assigned classroom when the tardy bell completes ringing at 15 minutes. Student grades will be conducted by 2% from a student's semester grade for each tardy beyond the second, not to exceed 10%. Students who accrue more than seven tardies will be referred to an administrator for standard school discipline. After 15 minutes of tardiness, a student is considered truant.

Truancy is defined as absence from school or class without the knowledge and/or consent of the parent/guardian or absence from school of class once arriving on campus without the knowledge or consent of the school. If an absence is not excused within 48 hours it is truant. Students may be denied the opportunity to submit academic work.

Students are subject to discipline up to and including long-term suspension for truancy.

Unexcused Absences

RCW 28A.225.010 places the responsibility of student attendance on the parent or legal guardian. Absences other than those defined as excused, given with the permission of the parent or legal guardian, are considered parental or unexcused absences (unexcused by the state but excused by the parent). Parents and/or legal guardians should understand that any absences will affect academic progress and, in the case of unexcused absences, academic work may be denied. For this reason, we recommend that parents plan ahead with pre-arranged absences.
